Programme Overview
The SRRA is a unique two-year blended learning programme that incorporates online interaction and residential block weeks in Pretoria. Over the span of two years, four contact sessions are scheduled, each lasting one week. The programme aims to foster an in-depth understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights from domestic, regional, and global perspectives.
Programme Goals
The LLM/MPhil (Sexual & Reproductive Rights in Africa) has both immediate and long-term objectives. In the short term, the programme seeks to:
- Equip students with knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Develop students’ research skills in sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Foster advocacy skills for promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Nurture practical skills for securing the realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Beyond the immediate academic enrichment, the Master’s programme seeks to provide broader societal benefits. Long-term goals include:
- Grooming leaders capable of influencing social transformation.
- Raising public awareness about sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Enhancing public understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Boosting the capacity of groups, networks, or organisations that promote sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Advancing the reproductive and sexual health and rights of individuals and communities.
- Combating discrimination and stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Influencing interventions and policy-making in sexual and reproductive health and rights at national and regional levels.
Scholarship and Eligibility
Each year, up to 15 students are selected for the programme. Those who do not receive scholarships may be admitted as self-funding students.
The LLM degree is open to individuals with an LLB degree or equivalent. The MPhil degree is open to non-lawyers with at least an honours degree in a discipline relevant to sexual and reproductive rights in Africa. All foreign qualifications must meet South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) requirements. Applicants must have excellent academic credentials and demonstrate a commitment to or interest in human rights.
