Africa Centre Artists In Residency Programme (AIR) is calling for applications from emerging, mid-career and senior level artists across artistic discipline i.e. visual arts, performing arts, curatorial practice, performing arts, music, creative writing and literature who are either self-taught or formally trained in their respective discipline. The deadline for submission of entries is 15th October, 2018.

Applications for the Africa Centre Artists In Residency Programme (AIR) are now open.

On offer this year are artist residencies at Bundanon Trust in Australia, Instituto Sacatar in Brazil,  Fountainhead Residency &International Studio & Curatorial Program in the USA. Residencies at these spaces are available to early and mid-career African artists who predominantly live and work on the continent.

Thay are also accepting applications from mid-late career, highly accomplished artists for residencies at the prestigious Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center located on the shores of Lake Como in Italy.

All residencies are available to innovative, provocative and socially conscious visual and performance artists, composers, fiction and nonfiction writers, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers, curators, as well as artists working in digital art forms.

Each residency award has a distinct structure, set of requirements and duration. The costs of the residency and round-trip airfare are included in each residency award made.

Africa Centre Artists In Residency Programme Criteria.

Applicants must:

  • Be over 21 years of age;
  • Have a valid passport;
  • Be from the African continent and must minimally reside in Africa for six months of the year, and
  • Display a high proficiency in English

Africa Centre Artists In Residency Programme Selection Process.

Applicants are shortlisted by a panel of AIR staff, strategic partners and seasoned art practitioners (curators, collectors, and art critics) who form part of the extensive Africa Centre network. Artists will be shortlisted based on the quality of their work/portfolio, written narrative (i.e. the ability to adequately process and respond to the application questions) as well as their previous experience and history of developing artistic work that advances social change and transformation in their communities.

How to Apply for the Africa Centre Artists In Residency Programme.

Applications can be made through the following avenues

2. E-mail Application:

Download the AIR application form and send your application directly to airsubmissions@africacentre.net. Please ensure that all attachments are less than 5MB. Be sure to add the artistic discipline you are applying under i.e. visual arts/performing arts; music, etc followed by a dash and your full name in the email subject field. If your attachments are larger than 5MB, you can upload them using Google Drive and share a link to the folder with us via the same email address listed above.

PARTICIPATING RESIDENCY PROGRAMMES:

In addition to the requirements associated with each of the residencies detailed below, successful applicants will be required to complete an evaluation at the end of their residency and to make an in-kind donation to the AIR program. The donations often take the form of a piece of art or other means of artistic output. The nature of each donation will be discussed with each applicant following their award.
